I think the future of mobile devices for learning will continue to grow and mobile devices will become more and more affordable. I think the main concern is convincing the schools to allow utilization of it in the classroom. After finding out Poll Everywhere from Dr. Newberry and trying it out myself, I shared it with my co-workers. I they were going to be as excited as I was about it, but I was wrong. They were worried about their students being distracted by their phones. They also commented that it would be contradictory to what they have been telling their students about cells phones when they come to class, silence it or turn it off.
I think using mobile devices in the classroom will take some time for others to adapt to. Similar to the evolution of computers in the classrooms, as Dr. Newberry mentioned, it'll take some time. From a student's perspective, I think mobile devices and web services have been widely used and accepted by students. Each student is a member of at least one web service, whether it be MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, just to name a few. When my 8th grade brother missed a couple of classes, he logged on to his MySpace account, found one of his classmates and got details on what he had missed in class.
Increase in exposure to these mobile devices and web services to educators can help persuade them to accept the use of mobile devices in learning. If they were well-informed of the usage and how these devices and services does increase the students' learning experience. To be honest, before taking Dr. Newberry's ETEC classes, I never thought of using blogs, podcasts and social networks for educational purposes. I really believe that increase in exposure of the various usage of mobile devices and web services for learning can help change the minds of those who are skeptical about it.

Blog 4: Developing Content for Mobile Devices
July 13 - 19
There are various contents I consume for my mobile devices, iPod and smartphone. For my iPod I've download and transferred both audio and video to listen and view while I'm not near a computer. Other mobile devices I use, for entertainment purposes, include Nintendo DS Lite and Sony PSP. I recently purchased a Netbook. A Netbook is a small portable laptop designed for communication and Internet use, which is perfect for online learning. I love it because it's really small and light, I could even fit it in my purse! One major disadvantage for me is I can't play video games on it =(.
With my phone, I've created text messages, taken pictures, create documents, use the calendar to set up remiders and utilized the calculator. What I really liked about my phone is I could sync it with my MS Outlook calendar and contact lists. I would really like to learn how to create podcasts because I know how useful it is in education. I just downloaded audacity, free audio editor and recorder. I read about it in an article once and hopefully I'll have the time to learn it.

Blog 3 - Software/Applications and Web Services

Your blog post response should be a review of a variety (3-5) of mobile device applications and/or web services that you find interesting. Be sure to list where you accessed the application or web service. Be sure to provide an explanation of how you could use the application or web service for learning. Note: you don't have to try these on a mobile device to review them, but if you do please indicate so. Be creative and have fun!
Session 3:
Twitter (http://twitter.com/) is a mini blog, social networking, web service. Mini because it only allows for 140 characters, similar to a SMS text message. Twitter enables users to send and read each others' post, known as tweets. Tweets can be sent or received in two ways, the authors' site or through text messages. I think tweets can be useful in the academic setting. Professors can tweet class announcements to students to keep them updated and on track. Students could follow the professor and updates will be sent to them. I tried using it and found it very simple to use and I really feel that it will benefit mobile learning.
Poll Anywhere (http://www.polleverywhere.com/) is an online polling web service. Participants can answer through text messages or online. This is similar to a clicker. Professors can create polls or quizzes online and students can answer using their mobile phones or the Internet. I did try this service and I was amazed by what it can do and most of all the service is free if participants are 30 or less. The results are displayed real time so students can view how the others voted.
RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) feeds is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed" or, "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS). RSS feeds can be used in education by allowing students to subscribe to RSS feeds that are relevant to the class. Professors can also make their own feeds and students can subscribe. I have been using feeds to keep myself updated and informed regarding website designs and development.

- Thought about my 2nd project. I am thinking about revising my project proposal to construct an assignment using a mobile device instead of doing a book review. Reading the articles for my bibliographies gave some ideas on how to use mobile devices for learning.

Blog 2 - Course Update
Assignment:
You must make a status update post on your blog this week. If you are doing the second project (the optional project for the A) discuss your ideas in this blog post. Otherwise just check in and let everyone know what you are doing to make sure you are making progress towards completing the class assignments.
This week I've researched and found 5 peer-reviewed articles for my annotated bibliographies. Some of these articles can also contribute to the Mobile Device Paper I will be writing about discussing the pros and cons of mobile devices for learning. Also, I updated my blog to include links to my projects / assignments.
Sometime this week I am planning on getting some of my bibliographies done because some of the articles I found are long. I am planning on doing the optional 2nd project. For this project I am thinking of writing a comparison paper that discuss the capabilities of mobile devices for learning or writing a book review that relates to mobile devices for learning. Does anyone know of any good books regarding this topic?
